چکیده

Anticipating new spectroscopic studies of quasar companions, we calculate expected emission line spectra for the companion galaxies. Under the assumption of isotropic photoionizing radiation, we predict equivalent widths for Hα, Hβ, [O iii] λ5007, [O ii] λ3727, [Ne iii] λ3869, and Mg ii λ2798 lines. We consider 6 quasars, two of which (PKS 213514 and PKS 2349-014) have very close companions with projected separation < 4h kpc. For these companions the calculated emission lines should be easily observable, with Wλ ∼> 20 Å for the [O iii], [O ii], and Hα lines. Presence of strong emission lines from the companions occupying only a tiny solid angle would suggest that 1) quasar radiation is isotropic; 2) companion galaxies have measurable amount of gas, which can be assessed using the photoionization models; 3) host galaxies, if present, have been depleted of gas or do not interact with the companions. Subject headings: quasars: emission lines — quasars: general — quasars: individual (PKS 2135-14, PKS 2349-014, PHL 909, NAB 0205+02, HE 1029-1401, PKS 0405-123)

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Qso Absorption Lines from Qsos1

We present the results of a search for metal absorption lines in the spectra of background QSOs whose sightlines pass close to foreground QSOs. We detect Mg II λλ2796,2803 absorption in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra of four z > 1.5 QSOs whose lines of sight pass within 26−98 h−1 70 kpc of lower redshift (z ≃ 0.5 − 1.5) QSOs. The 100% [4/4 pairs] detection of Mg II in the background QS...

3 QSOs Associated with Messier 82

The starburst / AGN galaxy M82 was studied by Dahlem, Weaver and Heckman using X-ray data from ROSAT and ASCA, as part of their X-ray survey of edge-on starburst galaxies. They found seventeen unresolved hard-X-ray sources around M82, in addition to its strong nuclear source, and other X-rays within the main body of M82. We have measured optical point sources at these positions, and have obtain...

Spectroscopy of Close Companions to QSOs and the Ages of Interaction-Induced Starbursts

We present low-resolution absorption-line spectra of three candidate close (< 3) companions to the low redshift QSOs 3CR323.1, PG1700+518 and PKS2135−147. The spectra were obtained with LRIS on the Keck telescopes and with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope. For 3CR323.1 and PG1700+518, we measure relative velocities that are consistent with an association ...

Are Optically-selected Quasars Universally X-ray Luminous? X-ray/uv Relations in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasars

We analyze archived Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of 536 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) quasars (QSOs) at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 2.7 in order to characterize the relative UV and X-ray spectral properties of QSOs that do not have broad UV absorption lines (BALs). We constrain the fraction of X-ray weak, non-BAL QSOs and find that such objects are rare; for example, sources u...
